Science: in whose hands?

A debate is under way amongst researchers, jurists, philosophers and economists, with input from the public welcome

Edited by Nicoletta De Cillis and Simona Galasso
April 03, 2012 - Who owns science? Those who carry it out, or fund it or use it? What should be the role of the citizen in scientific issues that directly affect him or her?

These are the questions that heralded the start of the "Science and Democracy Forum 2012", a wide reaching online debate opened by Mario Capanna, President of the Genetic Rights Foundation which is promoting the initiative. A number of Italian intellectuals, researchers, jurists, economists, philosophers have already become involved in the debate which will soon be opened up to include international participants.

Every Monday at midday on http://www.scienceanddemocracy.it, an article will be posted on the debate. The public will also be encouraged to take part by commenting on articles already published or by airing their own contributions.

The discussion will be centred on the need to democratize science and to promote public and consumer participation in choices relating to innovation, especially in the areas of food, health, environment, GMOs, or nanotechnology, which are of primary importance to them. The model which panelists are asked to consider is that of "participatory research", a process already successfully applied in both Canada and France, which allows citizens to intervene in the scientific decision-making process.

In short, who should make the decisions regarding science when science concerns everyone?

The initiative is sponsored, amongst others, by the Senate of the Republic, the Representation of the European Commission in Italy, the Ministry of the Environment and various Italian regions.
